'Dean' of W.Va. sportswriters, Mickey Furfari, featured at book signing
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Legendary West Virginia sports journalist Mickey Furfari will be in Charleston on Monday to meet and greet with his fans during a book-signing event held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at United Bank's main offices at 500 Virginia St. E. Furfari will sign his second book, "Mickey's Mountaineer Memories Volume II," which documents many of his experiences covering West Virginia University athletics since the 1940s. A follow-up to his first book that chronicles his 65-plus years of covering West Virginia University's athletic department and programs, Furfari's second compilation features a profile of his former classmate and longtime "Voice of the Mountaineers" Jack Fleming, and pieces on famous WVU quarterbacks Pat White and Major Harris, and current Mountaineer basketball coach Bob Huggins.Volume II also details some of Furfari's lighter moments in a piece he titled "The Dumbest Thing I Ever Did In My Life," along with some more serious takes that include his not-so-cordial relationship with former WVU President Neil Bucklew.
Other stories in the newest book focus on WVU player, coach and athletic director Leland Byrd, the late Coach Bill Stewart, athletic trainer Whitey Gwynne, two-sport star James Jett, current athletic director and former quarterback Oliver Luck, and WVU's stunning 2012 Orange Bowl victory.Former WVU star quarterback and NFL referee Fred Wyant, one of Mickey's longtime friends, authored the foreword for the book, which is available for purchase at the event.The price of the book is $25, plus tax.
