Rockefeller hosts state hearing on video violence

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- Parents, mental health experts and representatives of the video game industry are gathering in Martinsburg to discuss the impact violence may have on the adolescent brain.Sen. Jay Rockefeller is holding a hearing Monday afternoon at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center. The West Virginia Democrat chairs the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.Rockefeller has introduced the Violent Content Research Act. The bill would direct the National Academy of Sciences to investigate whether violent games and programming have harmful effects on children.
A report would be due within 18 months.Rockefeller says court decisions show that many people still believe violent games aren't more dangerous to children than classic literature or Saturday morning cartoons.But he says parents, pediatricians and psychologists know better.
