Marriage equality supporters rally at Byrd courthouse
Supporters of marriage equality rally outside the Robert C. Byrd Federal Courthouse on Tuesday evening. The U.S. Supreme Court began hearing arguments earlier Tuesday challenging Proposition 8, a California constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages in 2008. The high court will also hear arguments today against the Defense of Marriage Act, a federal law that prevents the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages for the purpose of federal laws or programs. Married gay couples argue that under DOMA they can't collect federal benefits, prevent deportations or file joint tax returns.
