Streets to be closed for UMW rally Monday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Several streets in downtown Charleston will be closed Monday to accommodate a United Mine Workers rally and march.The rally will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the Charleston Civic Center. UMW members and supporters will begin arriving at 9 a.m., which may cause congestion around the Civic Center, Charleston police said.About 11 a.m., Clendenin Street between Quarrier and Lee streets will be closed to begin staging for the march.
About 11:30 a.m. the march will proceed south on Clendenin Street to Virginia Street, then east on Virginia Street to Court Street, then north on Court Street to the area between Lee Street and Washington Street (between the Embassy Suites and Laidley Tower).Traffic on Virginia and Court streets will be stopped for the march and opened as quickly as possible, police said. Court Street between Lee and Washington streets will be closed until about 1 p.m.After an event on Court Street, participants will walk west -- using the two left lanes -- on Washington Street to Reynolds Street, across Lee Street to the rear lot of the Civic Center. Traffic will be stopped as the group proceeds.
