Poca High School's Visual Volume was the Grand Champion of the small school division as well as the overall Honor Choir, due to having the highest score of the competition.
Cabell Midland's Rhythm in Red was named Grand Champion in the large schools division at the West Virginia Music Educators Association's State Show Choir Festival March 23.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Music Educators Association's State Show Choir Festival was held March 23 at Poca High School. Choirs from 17 high schools participated, divided into large and small school categories.Cabell Midland High School's Rhythm in Red was named Grand Champion in the large school division. The group also received awards for Best Vocals, Best Choreography and Best Show Design, as well as a Superior rating.Poca High School's Visual Volume was named Grand Champion in the small school division and also earned the title of WVMEA Honor Choir as a result of having the highest score of the competition. In its division, the group was also awarded Best Vocals, Best Choreography and Best Instrumental Ensemble, as well as a Superior rating. Slater Jarrell was named Best Male Soloist.
Other awards in the large school division were first runner-up, Best Instrumental Ensemble and Best Costumes for Martinsburg High School; second runner-up, Best Female Soloist (Alison Vance) and Best Instrumental Soloist (Alec Neu) for Hurricane High School and third runner-up and Best Male Soloist (Wesley York) for Riverside High School Jefferson High School tied for third-runner up.Other awards in the small school division were first runner-up and Best Costumes for Ravenswood High School; second-runner up and Best Instrumental Soloist (Conner Michael) for Nitro High School; third runner-up and Best Female Soloist (Alicia Noble) for Robert C. Byrd High school and fourth runner-up and Best Show Design for Winfield High School.The middle school competition was held the night prior. The Grand Champion was Washington Irving Middle School, which also won Best Choreography and Best Show Design. Other awards were first runner-up and Best Costumes for South Harrison Middle; second runner-up and Best Vocals for Bridgeport Middle and third runner-up for Dunbar Middle.
