ELKINS, W.Va. -- Someone has been brightening the days of patients and staff at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins. An anonymous donor has sent flower arrangements to patients and staff during the last two weeks. Each arrangement had a card with a message that said, "Compassion lives in all of us.""It was such a surprise and wonderful for someone in the community to show such compassion for others," Misti Shine, the Progress Care Unit charge nurse, told The Inter-Mountain. "The patients were so excited to receive the flowers, and it brightened everyone's day. I thought this was an especially good time of year for this to happen. Everyone is so tired of being trapped inside, and the wonderful flowers were so bright and cheery."Shine said some patients do not have anyone to care for them and they don't have visitors or receive flowers.
"This was such a generous gesture for the anonymous donor," she said. "Everyone was so appreciative."
Mary's Greenhouse in Elkins made about 100 arrangements and delivered them on a staggered schedule."The unnamed donor was very excited to make the gifts to both patients in Davis Memorial Hospital and those working there," said Mary's Greenhouse employee Jennifer Gouer Pritt. "This is something the donor had always wanted to do and finally was able to do."Pritt said she chose daisies, carnations and other bright, cheery flowers for the arrangements."Our delivery folks said the patients were thrilled with the flowers," she said. "Some of the patients were so overwhelmed. It really gave those delivering the flowers a great feeling to be a part of this effort."Donald Knotts, of Hambleton, a recent patient at the hospital, said the flower arrangement he received from the anonymous donor was a wonderful gift.
