MU scholarship honors former chemistry chairman

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Marshall University says a scholarship has been established in honor of former chemistry department Chairman Steve Hanrahan, who died last month.The scholarship will be presented to a chemistry major who shows the greatest increase in overall grade-point average from freshman to sophomore year.
Hanrahan's daughter, Elizabeth Hanrahan, is associate dean of Marshall's College of Information Technology and Engineering. She said her father would have been delighted to have a scholarship in his name awarded to the most improved chemistry student.Steve Hanrahan joined Marshall as an assistant professor in 1963. He chaired the chemistry department from 1967 through 1977, when he became the first dean of the College of Science. He retired in 1997 and was 83 when he died Feb. 20 at a hospice facility in Huntington.
