Boone Memorial Hospital and the West Virginia Medical Institute are partnering to offer free diabetes education classes for the community from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday and April 12 and 19 in the upstairs conference room of Boone Memorial Hospital. Lunch will be provided at no cost. Boone Memorial will have a limited supply of free shirts it will award to participants who attend all three sessions. The sessions are part of the Everyone with Diabetes Counts (EDC) program, funded by Medicare and coordinated by WVMI. Classes are open to people who have diabetes, their family members and caregivers, especially those with Medicare. The Kanawha Trail Club will sponsor a hike Sunday on Kanawha State Forest's Snipe/Mossy Rock/Middle Ridge/Teaberry trails. Meet at 1:30 p.m. to carpool from Ohio and Randolph streets. Meet at the swimming pool parking area. The hike is approximately four miles on moderate grades.
Ostomy group meetings
The Charleston Area Ostomy Association meets on the first Sunday of each month except June, July, August and January. The next meeting will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Hansford Senior Center, St. Albans. The health-based nonprofit organization is dedicated to assisting people who have had or will have intestinal or urinary diversions. Kanawha County Parks and Recreation has scheduled their annual fishing rodeo for youths ages 3-10 from 9 a.m. to noon April 13 at Hersher Lake, adjacent to the Coonskin Park Family Center. Registration will take place in the Family Center from 8 to 9 a.m. Holders of Class Q fishing permits must bring their own equipment, bait and single hook. Minnows are not permitted. The event is sponsored by Kanawha County Parks and Recreation Commission and the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.
