CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Some students at the University of Charleston's Beckley campus next school year will pay half of what they did this year to stay on campus.UC-Beckley President Jerry Forster announced the special room rate of $1,800 Thursday, saying the school is trying several ways to get more students to enroll in the new branch of UC."The University of Charleston is working very hard to build our enrollment at UC-Beckley, and one of the most critical pieces of this process is creating a vibrant student-life environment where students can grow socially and professionally," Forster said. "To do this, we need more students living in our residence halls."Last year, the Higher Learning Commission approved UC's full takeover of Mountain State University, after the Beckley-based school's accreditation was withdrawn because of problems in leadership and program oversight. In addition to Mountain State's former main campus in Beckley, UC also expanded onto MSU's branch campus in Martinsburg. In January, UC announced its highest enrollment in 30 years, with more than 1,800 students attending the three campuses and enrolled online. However, enrollment was slowed down at the new campuses because UC was awaiting word from higher education officials about financial-aid issues and acceptance of international students.
Donations to a UC-Beckley start-up effort will help fund the room-and-board discount for students, Forster said."We are actively seeking donor partners to help us with our efforts at UC-Beckley," he said, "and, so far, the community has been very receptive."UC-Beckley's campus features two mixed-gender residence halls: Hogan Hall and University Hall. Each offers lounges for studying and socializing, laundry facilities and free cable and wireless Internet, and they are located within walking distance of downtown Beckley and the YMCA.The special rate applies to double-occupancy rooms and is open to students enrolled full-time at the Beckley location.
