Streets are closed near the Marriott hotel in downtown Charleston after a suspicious package was found.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Kanawha County Sheriff Johnny Rutherford said a suspicious backpack left outside the Marriott Hotel and Charleston Town Center mall did not contain a bomb.Emergency crews shut down several streets to foot and vehicle traffic around the mall and hotel about 10:45 a.m. due to an apparent bomb scare.
Rutherford said someone left the backpack on the sidewalk and left quickly, arousing the suspicion of hotel staff. A Tupperware container containing screws and nails was found in the top of the backpack, prompting staff to call 911.Rutherford said a bomb disposal robot examined the backpack and X-rayed its contents, and bomb technician Sgt. Justin Paxton was called in. No explosives were found, and the backpack was removed, Rutherford said. "Charleston police did an excellent job evacuating and closing down the streets," Rutherford said. Charleston police are continuing the investigation.
