The Cat and Dog show A benefit for the Kanawha / Charleston Humane Association WHERE: The Blue Parrot, 14 Capitol St. WHEN: 10 p.m. Friday TICKETS: $5 INFO: 304-342-2583 CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Johnny Compton and Kipp McGhee don't really need much of an excuse to get their bands together. The two have been friends for years. Compton leads Johnny C and the Scurvy Dogs and McGhee's band is The Cat Daddys. Putting together a show about cats and dogs just seemed like something they ought to do. "We'd talked about it for a while," Compton said. "We just couldn't find any open dates," McGhee said, "and we thought, if we were going to do this, we ought to do some good with the theme." So, Friday night, both bands will be at The Blue Parrot for a show to benefit the Kanawha / Charleston Humane Association. "With 100 percent of the proceeds from the door going to the humane society," McGhee added. Compton and McGhee said the local music scene gravitates toward generosity -- at least, the people they play with. McGhee said almost every band in the Charleston area signs up for a couple of charity shows each year. They do shows for sick kids, accident victims and, sometimes, the widows and children of other musicians. "Music is meant to be shared and used to help people," Compton said. The benefit for the humane society, McGhee said, comes from a good place. He and Compton are both animal lovers. "I've got two cats and a 50-pound Great Dane puppy," he said. "It's the first breed dog I've had. All my other dogs have been shelter animals." The two said the show isn't just about doing a good deed. Both singers are looking forward to playing on the same stage on the same night. "It's been a while since we've done anything like this," McGhee said.
