CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Ten parents in Kanawha County will have to pay fines and perform community service because their children didn't go to school. Kanawha County Circuit Court Judge Duke Bloom fined each parent $211 and placed them on 90 days of probation. The Charleston Daily Mail reports that Bloom sentenced the parents Wednesday. All 10 parents were charged with first-offense truancy after their children had more than five unexcused absences from school. The absences ranged from 10 to 41 days. They could be charged with second-degree truancy if their children miss any more days of school. If that happens, Bloom told them he wouldn't hesitate to send them to jail.
