PRINCETON, W.Va. -- Mercer County won't be helping the city of Bluefield enforce its new ban on pit bulls.County Commissioner Gene Buckner tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that any pit bulls sent by the city to the Mercer County Animal Shelter can be reclaimed by their owners. That's the policy the shelter follows for all animals.
Buckner says the county abides by state code, and there's no state ban on pit bulls. He says the county is not in "the animal containment business."Bluefield Mayor Linda Whalen says if the county releases confiscated pit bulls back to their owners in Bluefield, the city will take the county to court.
Bluefield's Board of Directors approved an ordinance banning the breed Tuesday. Some animal advocates criticized the decision.
