Southern W.Va.'s 1st Catholic high school planned
BECKLEY, W.Va. -- A planned expansion at St. Francis de Sales School in Beckley will create southern West Virginia's first Catholic high school.
St. Francis currently offers elementary and middle school courses.
The Register-Herald reports that school officials announced plans to expand into secondary education on Tuesday.
Principal Karen Wynn says courses for ninth-graders and 10th-graders will begin in the fall. Eleventh-grade courses will begin in fall 2014 and 12th-grade courses will begin in fall 2015.
The high school also plans to have track and field and cross country sports teams.
The high school will be located behind the existing school. Emily Meadows will serve as the new school's dean. She is retiring as director of personnel for the Raleigh County public school system.
