A grand opening is set for June at Smoke Hole Caverns & Resort, 13 miles north of Seneca Rocks and 7 miles south of Petersburg on W.Va. 55.The resort includes a log motel, log cabins, riverside cottages and the geologically unique caverns -- with such features as the world's longest ribbon stalactite and a crystal cave coral pool -- that dates back more than 13 million years and is a constant 56 degrees.
The caverns also has accommodated the needs of Seneca Indians, Civil War soldiers and moonshiners. The parade kicks off the 72nd annual festival, which continues through May 19.
Dozens of carriages, old and new, are pulled by horses of all breeds. Serving as honor unit and leading this year's parade will be the flag-carrying, 16-member United Horseman's Association Equestrian Team from Virginia.Downtown Buckhannon will be filled with live musicians and vendors selling food and baked goods for sale. A Wild West Show will take place at 11 a.m., 12:30, 2 and 3 p.m. at Jawbone Park.
