Suspicious package found at McDowell federal prison
WELCH, W.Va. -- Authorities are investigating a suspicious package discovered at a federal prison in Southern West Virginia.
Federal Correctional Institution McDowell spokesman Glenn Friss said employees of the prison's mailroom flagged the package during a routine screening Wednesday.
Friss told the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that a hazardous-material team determined that the package contained a non-hazardous material.
Friss said he wouldn't identify the package's contents or why it was suspicious because the investigation is ongoing.
He said there was no danger to inmates, staff or the public.
Friss said the FBI has been contacted.
About 1,650 male inmates are housed at the medium-security prison and an adjacent minimum-security satellite prison camp.
