By Staff reports
FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. -- National Park Service rangers and CSX railroad detectives are trying to determine the identity of a woman who was struck and killed by a freight train as she walked along CSX mainline tracks in the New River Gorge National River on Monday.Crewmembers of the train told investigators that the black woman, believed to be about 50 years old, had her head covered by a blanket at the time of the incident, which took place during a heavy rainstorm.
Although the train's horn was sounded and the locomotive's brakes were applied, the woman did not react in time to avoid being struck by the lead locomotive, according to a spokeswoman for the New River Gorge National River. The incident occurred downstream from Glade Creek, on the Fayette County side of the New River.
