State bridge to be named for Civil War soldier

MINERAL WELLS, W.Va. -- A bridge in West Virginia is being named in honor of a soldier awarded the Medal of Honor for capturing a Confederate flag during a Civil War battle in Virginia.The West Virginia 14 bridge over Interstate 77 in Mineral Wells will be named the Army Sergeant Richard Bowry Memorial Bridge.The Parkersburg News and Sentinel reports that the West Virginia Division of Highways plans to install a sign June 18.
Bowry, also known as Boury, served with Co. C of the 1st W.Va. Cavalry. He captured a Confederate battle flag despite suffering a gunshot wound to his leg on March 8, 1865, during a battle in Charlottesville, Va.Wood County Delegate Tom Azinger says Bowry is one of the first West Virginians to receive the Medal of Honor.
