Fatal Clay County shooting not random, police say
HARTLAND, W.Va. -- Police do not believe the fatal shooting of a Clay County man gardening in his front yard Tuesday was random.
They are looking for a person of interest, State Police Sgt. Greg Stalnaker told reporters Wednesday.
Clarence Jackson Stone, 65, was shot to death at 2:15 p.m. while gardening in his front yard along Sycamore Street in Hartland. A witness reported hearing a gunshot, possibly from a shotgun. The witnesses looked out of the window and saw Stone slumped on the ground.
Stalnaker said the shooting remains under investigation, but detectives are following credible leads. No one has been arrested. Anyone with information is asked to call the State Police Detachment in Clay County at 304-587-2201.
