Police seek suspect in West Side shooting

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Police are looking for a man they said shot a Detroit man in the face and back on Charleston's West Side Thursday. Steven Thompson, 22, of Charleston, allegedly shot Ollie Nicholson, 22, of Detroit, at a vacant house in the 1600 block of Red Oak Street, Charleston Police Lt. Steve Cooper said.Detectives found one handgun shell casing inside the vacant home and several more casings outside.Nicholson eventually escaped by running a few blocks to 1639 Clay Ave., where he went inside and locked the door. He then asked the female homeowner to call 911 before collapsing, Cooper said. Paramedics arrived and took Nicholson to CAMC General Hospital. Nicholson was in stable condition and is expected to recover fully, Cooper told reporters Thursday evening.
Charleston police cordoned off nearby streets for more than an hour to look for evidence and interview neighbors. The shooting is not believed to be random, based on evidence gathered during the investigation, Cooper said. He would not elaborate on how Thompson and Nicholson know each other or what Nicholson was doing in Charleston.Detectives released Thompson's photo in hopes someone would identify where he is staying. Anyone with information on Thompson's whereabouts is asked to call Charleston Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division at 304-348-6480.Thompson most likely fled in a red Chevrolet Impala.Reach Travis Crum at travis.crum@wvgazette.com or 304-348-5163.
