The East Bank High School Alumni Association awarded a record 21 scholarships, each worth $3,000, to members of Riverside High School's Class of 2013 during the school's annual Academic Awards Ceremony, held last month. The alumni association's scholarship program began in 1959, when a single $25 scholarship was awarded to an East Bank High School graduating senior. The scholarship program continued to grow after East Bank and DuPont high schools were consolidated into the new Riverside High School in 1999. The award is open to all Riverside seniors, regardless of whether or not they live in the East Bank area.Since 1980, the East Bank High School Alumni Association has awarded nearly $350,000 in Dana and Ethel Ervin Scholarships, named in honor of a former East Bank principal and his wife."Our goal now is to be able to award 25 $10,000 scholarships annually," said Allen Tackett, former state adjutant general and chairman of the alumni association's yearly golf tournament -- the primary source of income for the scholarship fund. "We're on our way to making that happen," he said.Academic achievement, community involvement and commitment to earn a college degree are taken into consideration in determining who receives the scholarships. Students seeking the scholarships also write essays and take part in interviews with members of an alumni association scholarship committee, which this year included Sallie Pat Tackett, Rosalie King, Debbie Stanley, Kathy Lewis and Mary Jo Rader.
In addition to the golf tournament, which raised $120,000 for the scholarship found last year, the alumni association has been supported by donations from Alpha Natural Resources, Amherst-Madison, Azimuth Inc., The Ballard Foundation, WWMV LLC, BBL Carlton and BBL Carlton Hospitality, Brickstreet, Bulk Plants LLC, CAMC, Central West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau, Chesapeake Energy, Dominion Resources, DuPonT, the Hardy Family, James "Buck" Harless, James F.
