By Staff reports
LOGAN, W.Va. -- A fire at a Logan County funeral home has been ruled arson, a spokesman with the state Fire Marshal's Office said Monday evening.Chatman Funeral Home in Logan caught fire at about 3:40 a.m. Sunday, according to Logan County 911 dispatchers. No one was in the funeral home or the two apartments above it, according to Chief Scott Beckett of the Logan Fire Department. Most of the blaze was contained to the second floor of the building, where the apartments were located, Beckett said. He believes that's where the fire started.Firefighters were suspicious about the blaze that night and investigators with the Fire Marshal's office arrived on Monday.
The funeral home, which he called a "total loss," sustained water and smoke damage. Beckett estimated the fire caused about $1 million worth of damage. One firefighter fell about 15 feet while trying to extinguish the blaze Sunday, Beckett said."He's bruised up and sore, but it's part of the job," he said.Anyone with information is asked to call the Fire Marshal's arson tip line, at 1-800-233-FIRE. Up to $5,000 could be awarded for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
