FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. -- Fayette County businesses received several counterfeit $20 bills last week, according to Sheriff Steve Kessler.A bank discovered the counterfeit currency Monday. Investigators, who conferred with U.S. Secret Service officials in Charleston, discovered that more counterfeit bills had cropped up during the previous week.Police believe the culprits might have been traveling through the Kanawha Valley.
Kessler said the bills are fairly good imitations and can be deceptive on first glance. He encouraged local business owners to take special precautions to detect counterfeit bills.
Kessler noted it can be fairly easy to determine if bills are fraudulent. He suggested business owners hold bills up against a light source to check for a ghost image on the lower right corner."This is the quickest and easiest method of determining the validity of a suspect bill," Kessler said in a news release.
