A Charleston businessman has been chosen as the recipient of the 2013 Spirit of the Valley award.The YMCA of the Kanawha Valley will honor K. Richard C. Sinclair, president of Jefferds Corp., at a noon luncheon Aug. 21 at the Charleston Civic Center.Each year, the award is presented to someone who exemplifies a life of "charity and wisdom, patience and humility," as Saint Francis described, according to a statement from the YMCA."Richard is a community leader who has a great sense of humor, but also a deep caring for his community," said John Giroir, president and CEO of the YMCA.
Originally of Belfast, Northern Ireland, Sinclair moved to the United States in 1952. He has worked with Jefferds and Moore, now Jefferds Corp., since 1975.Sinclair has served as president of the Holz School PTA, Edgewood Country Club, Charleston Rotary Club, and chairman of the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation Board among other community service roles.He and his wife, Marion Evans Jefferds, have three children.Sinclair was chosen by a vote of a committee of past recipients and community leaders.
"They actually make the selection, but I think the focus is to try to recognize someone with excellent community service that has done things to benefit the people in our Kanawha Valley," Giroir said.The award luncheon also serves as a fundraiser for the YMCA. Money raised by the luncheon benefits the YMCA's community assistance program, which allows children and families -- who might not have afforded it otherwise -- to participate in YMCA activities, Giroir said.After expenses, last year's luncheon brought in more than $200,000 of the $245,000 program cost, Giroir said.The YMCA is not the only organization that benefits from the luncheon."Our event might be unique or different [from other organizations' fundraisers]," he said. "The recipient also gets to select another organization that benefits from the luncheon. Some of the funds raised goes to benefit another organization."Sinclair chose the Childhood Language Center and West Virginia Read Aloud. Each organization will receive $7,500, he said."It truly is a community event," Giroir said of the luncheon.
