WVU prof to talk about W.Va. black big band book
BECKLEY, W.Va. -- A West Virginia University music history professor will talk about his book to mark the state's sesquicentennial and Juneteenth celebrations.
Christopher Wilkinson, author of "Big Band Jazz in Black West Virginia, 1930-1942," will speak at the 110 Marshall venue in Beckley at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
In his book, Wilkinson discusses his discovery of an often-forgotten dimension of West Virginia's diverse musical history and culture: a large, enthusiastic audience of black West Virginans for the big bands of the 1930s and early 1940s.
A $5 donation is suggested for the event at 110 Marshall Ave.
