Charleston fireworks slated for 9:45 p.m. Wednesday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The city of Charleston's fireworks display will launch at about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday. Preceding the fireworks, at 8 p.m., the West Virginia Symphony will perform in concert at Haddad Riverfront Park's Schoenbaum Stage.The fireworks show, by Pyrotechnico, will be launched from two locations on MacCorkle Avenue, across the Kanawha River.Two other fireworks displays will be held Thursday night and Friday night at Appalachian Power Park, when the West Virginia Power plays at home.           City officials say the best vantage point for the fireworks will be from Haddad Riverfront Park and on Kanawha Boulevard downtown, according to a news release.   Starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, several vendors will be set up along Kanawha Boulevard near the park to sell food and beverages.
Kanawha Boulevard will be closed between Capitol Street and Court Street starting at 5:30 p.m.Because of the launch sites, traffic will be affected at different times during the evening.MacCorkle Avenue will be closed between Porter Road and U.S. 119, starting at 6 p.m. But eastbound traffic to access the train depot and South Side Bridge, however, will be permitted via Thayer and Ferry streets until 9 p.m.At that time, Thayer, Ferry and the South Side Bridge will be closed in preparation for the fireworks. Just before the show begins, Loudon Heights Road will be closed from the South Side Bridge intersection to Grosscup Road. While Bridge Road will be open, drivers will not be able to access downtown or travel by way of MacCorkle Avenue after 9 p.m.The streets will remain closed until city cleanup crews are able to complete their cleanup of affected areas following the show, according to a release.
