Federal prison in W.Va. gets green building honor
HAZELTON, W.Va. -- The Federal Bureau of Prisons is celebrating its recognition for green building at its facility in Hazelton.
Moseley Architects said the new medium-security Federal Correctional Institution at the United States Penitentiary has earned a gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The 540,000-square-foot, multi-building complex can house more than 1,100 inmates while minimizing environmental impact and conserving resources.
The facility features an innovative laundry-water recycling system that is estimated to reduce water usage by 50 percent. Water is further conserved with low-flow lavatories and showers.
The complex also features a highly efficient HVAC system and was built with as many regionally manufactured materials as possible.
Strategic placement of windows and other light sources minimize the need for electrical lighting, while maintaining security.
