Harrison County boy accidentally shot being buried today

NUTTER FORT, W.Va. -- An 11-year-old West Virginia boy accidentally shot by his grandmother is being laid to rest. The family of William Andrew Owens planned services Friday at Amos Carvelli Funeral home in Nutter Fort, followed by a private burial.The boy died Sunday night in Jarvisville when 57-year-old Tina Owens fired multiple shots from a handgun in the dark at suspected intruders.One pierced the wall of her grandson's bedroom 200 yards away and struck him in the chest as he lay in bed.Harrison County Prosecutor Joe Shaffer will present a case to the grand jury in September.
The boy had just finished the fifth grade at Salem Elementary School.He enjoyed hunting, football and fishing. His obituary says he is survived by four siblings and two stepbrothers.Sheriff Albert Marano said the families' homes are in a rural part of north-central West Virginia, and both Tina Owens and her son went outside late Sunday night when they heard what they thought were intruders.Tina Owens then fired multiple shots to scare them off.It's unclear whether there were any intruders. Marano said deputies found no one else at the scene when they arrived.Marano said other children were in the home at the time, but no one else was hurt.
