Two conspired to rob, kill Mercer woman, police say
PRINCETON, W.Va. -- Two suspects robbed and killed a woman in Mercer County on Monday, police said. The two also tried to kill another person, police said, but he survived and identified his alleged attackers.
Latasha Marie Kanode, 23, of Princeton, and Steve R. McDonald, 32, of Bluefield, are both charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, burglary, robbery and assault during the commission of a felony.
Just before 6 a.m. Monday, Mercer County sheriff's deputies responded to a fatal shooting at Sherry Matthews' apartment at 1031 Thornton Ave. in Princeton, according to a criminal complaint filed in Mercer County Magistrate Court.
They found Matthews, 44, dead from multiple gunshot wounds. Edward Thomas, 41, had been shot in the face, but was alert and talking.
Thomas told deputies that Kanode and McDonald shot him and killed Matthews, according to the complaint.
When deputies questioned McDonald, he admitted to being at the scene of the shooting, but denied any involvement, according to the complaint.
McDonald later said he took Kanode to the house to buy prescription pills from Matthews, according to the complaint. He also said he threw the gun out of his truck window, but deputies found the weapon hidden under the hood of his truck, according to the complaint.
Deputies later arrested Kanode, who allegedly said she and McDonald planned to rob and kill Matthews. She said they went to Matthews' apartment acting like they were there to buy pills, then robbed her of $11,000 and shot her and Thomas, according to the complaint.
McDonald later admitted to the robbery and shooting, according to the complaint.
Both McDonald and Kanode were being held in Princeton's city jail without bail on Tuesday.
