W.Va. program gets federal grant to train doctors

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- A West Virginia program is receiving part of $12 million in federal funding to support the recruitment and retention of primary-care physicians. The Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education Payment Program expands residency training in community-based settings like Community Health Systems in Beckley. The program trains doctors in family and internal medicine, among other medical disciplines.
Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., said Community Health Systems is being awarded a $337,500 grant as part of the program.Rockefeller said the program is important because it helps recruit and train doctors while keeping them in rural areas of West Virginia where there are too few of them to meet residents' needs.
