SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- One person was taken to a hospital late Thursday after an apparent shooting in an area near an apartment complex and South Charleston High School. Police would not let anyone inside or outside of a perimeter set up around Southmoor Hills Apartments after the apparent shooting.Details were limited at the scene. Police called off the search late Thursday night, and were not available for an update early Friday morning.At about 11:15 p.m., law enforcement vehicles sped quickly from the scene at the apartment complex after a report of a man walking near a BP gas station on U.S. 60 carrying a rifle.Earlier Thursday night, medics had been staging in the area around the apartment complex, and at least one person was transported from the scene. A South Charleston Police officer said no one was allowed inside or outside Southmoor Hills Apartments.A Kanawha County Sheriff's deputy said a high-powered semi-automatic weapon was used in the shooting. Radio dispatches indicated the male suspect might have been carrying an AK-47 rifle.Metro 911 was made aware of the shooting just after 9:30 p.m.Lucky Ray, who lives on Chestnut Street near the entrance to Southmoor Apartments, said he heard two to three shots from what sounded like a high-caliber firearm and one or two other shots from what sounded like a smaller caliber weapon.Police continued to look for the suspect at 11 p.m. Thursday, and moved assembled media further away from the scene.Canine units also were searching the area, and a State Police helicopter was circling in the area after 11 p.m.In addition to South Charleston Police, the Kanawha County Sheriff Department's SWAT and drug units were on the scene, which was being secured with help from Charleston Police.
