Man survives first crash, then is killed in second
ST. MARYS, W.Va. -- An Ohio man survived a car crash in Pleasants County late Wednesday only to be struck and killed by a passing car, State Police said.
West Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Baylous said Ben H. Gabriel, 39, of Athens, Ohio, was heading north on W.Va. 2 in Pleasants County when he apparently lost control of his vehicle, went about 50 feet over an embankment and slammed into a tree.
Baylous said Gabriel was able to get out of the car before it caught fire. He began walking along W.Va. 2, and had gone about a quarter-mile when he was apparently struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver.
Troopers with the State Police detachment in St. Marys are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call 304-684-7101.
