Guided hikes to be offered at Kanawha State Forest
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Guided hikes covering topics ranging from wildflowers to nature photography will be offered Saturday in Kanawha State Forest starting at 9 a.m., during the annual Margaret Denson Fall Nature Walks program.Registration for the program begins at 8:30 a.m. at Kanawha State Forest's swimming pool area. Cost is $5 for adults and $2 for those under 16, with all proceeds benefiting the Kanawha State Forest Foundation.
Participants in an aquatic life hike along Davis Creek will use nets to catch and identify fish, insects and other forms of wildlife. Gubernatorial photographer Steve Rotsch, who is also a prolific wildlife photographer whose work appears in Wonderful West Virginia and other publications, will lead this year's wildlife photography hike.Other hikes taking place Saturday cover wildflowers, trees, general ecology, expanding outdoor awareness skills, mushrooms, edible and useful plants, and the history of Kanawha State Forest.Hikes are expected to last until about noon, when hot dogs and soft drinks will be available at the swimming pool area. A presentation by the Three Rivers Avian Center on birds of prey will take place at 1 p.m.For information, call the Forest Office at 304-558-3500.
