State man in court in slayings of mom, grandmother
WESTON, W.Va. -- A man charged with killing his mother and grandmother in 1999 is set to appear in court today.
Thirty-nine-year-old Joseph Metz of Horner is set to attend a probable-cause hearing with Special Magistrate Tammy Marple, who ordinarily sits in Harrison County. The two magistrates in Lewis County, where the crimes occurred, have been recused.
Metz was charged last week with two counts each of murder, kidnapping and robbery. He's in jail without bond.
Marcus Maxine Stalnaker and her daughter, Mary Friend disappeared Dec. 1, 1999, after leaving their Jane Lew home on a Christmas shopping trip. Their silver-gray station wagon was found five days later.
Authorities have charged 58-year-David Martin Hughes and 51-year-old Charles S. Freeman with the same crimes.
They're from Archbold, Ohio, and are in custody pending extradition.
