New River Gorge draws visits amid shutdown

GLEN JEAN, W.Va. -- Visitors continue to flock to the New River Gorge National River despite a government shutdown that has sharply reduced the workers at the scenic attraction. The Charleston Daily Mail reported vehicles Thursday lined the road to the visitor center, ignoring signs that warned the public of the closure.
One visitor said the shutdown can close the park, but it can't block the views.Chief ranger Jeff West said October is the second-busiest month for the park. With the shutdown, however, the park's workforce of 100 has been reduced to nine. West said Gauley River whitewater-rafting season is in full swing, and there are many public and private access points. Trails remain accessible, as well.
