NITRO, W.Va. -- A large parcel of land located behind Nitro Marketplace has been placed on the market for development, Old Colony realtor Jarrod Bowles announced at the Nitro City Council meeting Tuesday evening. The property, directly behind Lowe's and Electric Beach Tanning Salon, has a "serious slope," Bowles said, and structures could not be built on it "as it is."The plan is to level it out into "45 flat acres plus or minus" at a cost of $5 to $7 million, he said."Forty-five developable acres will hold a lot," Mayor Dave Casebolt said. "The potential benefit to the city is unbelievable."According to Casebolt, the city will seek the aid of the state Department of Commerce's Development Office to help attract a large investor. "It's important to note that Nitro has more developable property that anyone and is centrally located between Charleston and Huntington," Casebolt said. "With the tax incentives already in place and interstate access, Nitro Marketplace is a great place to invest."In regular business, council accepted the recommendation of committee chairman Al Walls to purchase a used 1995 Vermeer Diesel 1230 wood chipper at a cost of $10,000, which will be paid for over 10 months, interest free.Councilwoman Brenda Tyler, who cast the only negative vote, voiced concerns that there is no warrantee offered on the chipper.
"I have problems purchasing something that is 18 years old," she said. "It could break next week and it is not a good investment for the city."Casebolt said the wood chipper has new blades and "it is in outstanding condition."The wood chipper will be used for property maintenance and will also provide free wood chips for residents, according to Casebolt. Also Tuesday:* Councilman Andy Shamblin reminded attendees that the Halloween Hoe Down is scheduled for Oct. 26 at Nitro City Park from 6 to 9 p.m.* Nitro Police Chief Brian Oxley commented on a shooting during a routine traffic stop early Tuesday morning. A man shot at a Nitro Police officer and struck his cruiser on Interstate 64 between the Cross Lanes and Nitro exits. The officer was unharmed and the individual escaped."Nitro is not immune," Oxley said. "Crime happens everywhere."
