The Upper Vandalia Historical Society will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Putnam County Board of Education office, behind the old courthouse in Winfield. Join members for "show and tell" and bring an item, story or pictures to share. Bring a friend or prospective member and stay for refreshments afterward. For information, call 304-760-2121.Housing authority meetingCharleston-Kanawha Housing Authority Board of Commissioners: will meet at 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 28 at 1525 Washington St. W.Free rose clippingsThe Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District will offer free rose clippings (slips) from the Ritter Park Rose Garden from 8 a.m. to noon on Nov. 4. The clippings may be obtained in the garden along with instructions on how to grow them. Rosarians recommend that people who want rose slips should prepare their beds well in advance. A bed should be in a well-drained area away from trees. It should have early morning sun and it should be made about 1 foot deep with a mixture of compost, soil, sand and rooting hormone. Other materials needed are plastic jugs, glass jars and mulch. Bring boxes to the rose garden to place the slips in. Do not bring plastic or paper bags. Wear leather gloves. For more information, call the park district at 304-696-5954.Fishing rodeoWest Virginia Indoor Clean Air Program will sponsor a Fishing Rodeo from 2 to 6 p.m. on Nov. 9 and 10 and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 11 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 314 Donnally St. The swimming pool has been stocked with 300 pounds of trout and the average size is 1 1/2 pounds. There are also 10 tagged fish for lucky anglers who will receive a prize. Fishing is free for youth 13 and under, while adults and teens 14 and over pay $10 per day. This is a tobacco-free event. Parking is available on the back parking lot, under the interstate from Court Street.
