War of 1812 veteran's gravestone found in Wheeling

WHEELING, W.Va. -- The grave marker of a War of 1812 veteran has been unearthed in Wheeling during a construction project.City Manager Robert Herron told The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register that workers discovered the 6-foot-tall, 1,000-pound obelisk while excavating a former playground that will be the site of a recreation park.The marker bears the name of Fielder Berry, his wife, Elizabeth, and one of his sons, George.
Herron said a partial human skeleton also was unearthed. He said the remains and the marker likely aren't related.The site was a cemetery before the playground opened in 1910.The marker will be installed at Mount Wood Cemetery as a monument to Berry and his family. The skeletal remains will be re-interred at another cemetery.
