Mingo infant suffocates under drugged dad, police say

By Staff reports

MATEWAN, W.Va. -- Police in Mingo County said a man passed out after smoking crack and taking a prescription painkiller on Thursday, suffocating his 7-week-old daughter.

Albert Moore, 21, of Matewan, was charged with child abuse resulting in death, a felony. Moore told Mingo County sheriff's deputies that he took the drugs before falling asleep in bed with his daughter, according to a criminal complaint filed in Mingo County Magistrate Court.

When he woke up some hours later, he found his daughter unresponsive under a large comforter, according to the complaint. Paramedics rushed the infant to Williamson Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Moore is being held in Southwestern Regional Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
