Safety concerns postpone DuPont pipeline removal

BELLE, W.Va. -- A project to remove four 1,000-foot-long pipelines from a hillside overlooking DuPont's plant in Belle has been delayed.Plant officials say they decided to find a safer way to remove the portion of the line closest to the top of the hill.
Plant Manager Jim O'Connor said the project is about two-thirds complete but part of the pipeline remains firmly anchored on land that is severely sloped. The Charleston Daily Mail reported work is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The newspaper reported that the pipeline was opened in 1930 as a way to save energy during the production of ammonia. It was shut down in the 1950s.
