Two injured when fire truck overturns in Roane County
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Two Roane County volunteer firefighters were injured this morning when their fire truck overturned on a rural road.
Delmas Walker, chief of the Gandeeville-Harmony Volunteer Fire Department, said he was driving with another firefighter along Harmony Road at about 7:25 a.m. when he was run off the road by a small car.
Walker said the fire engine ended up on its top in the roadway, "rubber side up and sunny side down."
Both Walker and the other firefighter received minor injuries in the accident, but were treated and released from the hospital by mid-morning. "We were very fortunate," he said. "We walked away. We'll be all right in a week or two."
Walker said the fire department has five trucks, but lost its only engine in the crash. He doesn't yet know if the vehicle can be repaired.
"It was beat up pretty good," he said. "You're talking a $175,000 or $200,000 vehicle. I don't know if insurance will total it out or not."
