Muslim community organization donates to UC

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Café a la Fikr -- a Charleston-based Muslim community organization -- presented the University of Charleston with $5,000 on Wednesday.The donation was based on 50 percent of the organization's ticket sales from its Café Comedy Night held earlier this month that featured Muslim comedian Fakir Azhar Usman.Ali Issa, a founding member of Café a la Fikr, said its partnership with UC (the two have organized public events together) in appropriate, given its goals of creating an avenue for public discourse.
"Donating to the University of Charleston as an institution of higher learning in our community is perfectly aligned with café's goals of fostering a greater cultural understanding through social interaction and education," Issa said.UC President Ed Welch said Café a la Fikr's donation is gratifying."We're pleased to be helpful in sharing with the community the message of diversity and inclusion and having an opportunity to cooperate with the Muslim community," Welch said. "It's a statement in the confidence they have in the university and the role the university plays in the community."
