Brewpub to become burrito spot

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Charleston residents will soon get a taste of a Huntington staple, as Black Sheep Burrito & Brews is planning to move into the space currently occupied by the Charleston Brewing Company.The brewing company will continue to brew beer, but the restaurant will close.The Charleston Urban Renewal Authority, which owns the building at 702 Quarrier St., agreed during an executive session Wednesday to transfer the lease from the brewpub to Black Sheep.Ann Saville, owner of the brewpub and nearby Taylor Books, said she made the decision to close the restaurant about a month ago."I have no experience running a restaurant," Saville said. "It's very hard if you can't be there 12 hours a day or right on top of everything."Black Sheep owner Pat Guthrie said Saville approached him with "a unique opportunity.""Come to find out they wanted to get out of the restaurant business," Guthrie said of their initial meeting in November.The transition makes sense given Black Sheep's reputation in the region, Saville said.
"It's very beneficial to [Guthrie] and to me because he's got already a lot of customers coming in," Saville said.While the Charleston Brewing and Black Sheep will operate under one roof, they will remain separate entities. Saville has no financial stake in Black Sheep, she said.Charleston Brewing Company's distribution is in high demand. Brewing isn't set to stop any time soon."We can barely keep up," Saville said of production.Guthrie said he is, however, excited to have his soon-to-be neighbor's libations on tap at the new location."I think we complement their beer and vice versa," Guthrie said of the restaurant's eclectic creations, which he described as "world fusion" inside of a tortilla.Guthrie plans to close the existing restaurant shortly after Christmas until Jan. 10, so he can make his own adjustments. Black Sheep Burrito & Brews' Charleston location will have a soft opening soon after work is completed.
