New bank sign approved by zoning board
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Southern West Virginia's first branch of MVB Bank will be getting a bit more exposure, as Charleston's Board of Zoning Appeals approved Thursday a waiver that will allow the new addition at 400 Washington Street East to have a sign that projects from the building.
The 44.5-square-foot sign will hang 4 feet from the building's corner at Washington and Margaret streets.
Although Charleston has an ordinance that prohibits such signs, city planner Lori Brannon said the city's Strong Neighborhoods Task Force is considering an amendment to the zoning ordinance that would permit projecting signs in certain parts of Charleston.
The city's Planning Department recommended the board pass the MVB Bank waiver, Brannon said.
"Their proposal is consistent with what the task force is proposing, but they would have to wait for that amendment to go through the process with City Council," Brannon said.
Construction began on the bank -- MVB's ninth branch in West Virginia -- in August. It is schedule to open in June, according to Aly Gregg, the bank's chief marketing coordinator.
Board members also approved a waiver for a fence height restriction at 1404 Quincy Lane, though the agreement allows 1 foot less than was requested.
Mary McJunkin requested the waiver so she could build a wall 6 feet high in front of her home to create more privacy. The ordinance for her neighborhood restricts fences to 4 feet in height, but McJunkin said the design of the wall would be compromised at that height.
The board approved the construction of a wall measuring 5 feet high.
