Vandalism found at Mercer County Islamic center
PRINCETON, W.Va. -- The sheriff's department in Mercer County is investigating vandalism at an Islamic worship center near Princeton.
Deputy E.P. Parks tells The Bluefield Daily Telegraph the vandalism involves anti-Islamic sentiments spray painted at the Islamic Society for the Appalachian Region. The vandalism occurred late Sunday or early Monday.
Abdul Piracha is one of the senior leaders at the regional Islamic center. He said the slurs were found on the worship center's exterior and on a sign.
Piracha called the vandalism hurtful and said it wasn't the first time the center was targeted. The first occurred after the 9/11 attacks on New York City and Washington.
After that incident, the community came forward in a show of support.
