CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin issued a proclamation Monday ordering all U.S. and state flags displayed at all State facilities be lowered to half-staff in honor of Maj. Gregory Vance Shumate of Ravencliff.Shumate passed away unexpectedly during a visit home while on active duty.Shumate enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1988 and was honorably discharged in 1991. He served in the West Virginia National Guard from 1991 to 1995, as well as the U.S. Air Force from 1996 to 2000. Shumate re-entered active duty in the Army in 2004.
He served in Operation Desert Shield/Operation Desert Storm, as well as Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Shumate received several awards during his service, including a Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Air Force Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star Device, the Southwest Asia Service Medal with one Campaign Star, the Iraq Campaign Medal with two Campaign Stars, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Air Force Training Ribbon, the Army Overseas Service Ribbon, the Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), the Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait) and the Parachutist Badge.
