The driver of this tandem-trailer Roadway truck died in a collision on Interstate 64 near Institute on Tuesday morning.
INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- A Tuesday morning accident involving a truck full of coal ash and a tractor-trailer left one person dead and another injured and closed all lanes of Interstate 64 westbound for several hours.The accident, which happened at around 5:45 a.m. near the Institute exit, was caused when a truck and trailer from Dolin Trucking in Dunbar merged onto I-64 from the Institute exit and was struck by a Roadway tractor-trailer in the rear.The driver of the Dolin truck, Michael Powell of Winfield, was taken to Thomas Hospital with minor injuries.The driver of the tandem-trailer Roadway truck, John Charles Miller, 65, of Indianapolis, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department. His body has been sent to the state Medical Examiner's Office.
The sheriff's department and the Institute Fire Department were on scene for more than four hours. The roadway reopened shortly before noon, according to Capt. Sean Crosier of the sheriff's office.The Accident Reconstruction Unit of the sheriff's department was working on determining the cause of the accident.Crosier said the department responded to numerous accidents on interstate highways Tuesday morning after temperatures dropped and snow moved through the area.
