Man arrested in Court Street hammer attack
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Police in Charleston arrested a man in a hammer attack outside the Charleston Town Center mall last week.
Denzil Terrella Weatherspoon, 21, of Charleston, was charged with malicious wounding, a felony, on Tuesday.
On Dec. 19, there was an altercation between Ryan Lynch and a group of juveniles outside the mall on Court Street, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.
Weatherspoon had witnessed the altercation and ran up behind Lynch and struck him in the back of the head with a hammer, according to the complaint.
Lynch, of Charleston, was taken to CAMC General Hospital with a skull fracture. A piece of Lynch's skull was protruding into his brain, according to the complaint. He underwent surgery to implant a metal plate to support his skull.
A witness on scene later identified Weatherspoon to police. Weatherspoon is originally from Tennessee, according to the complaint.
Two juveniles have also been charged with malicious wounding in the attack. A juvenile petition was filed against them and their names were not released.
Police said Lynch knew the juvenile suspects. The search is on for at least two more people in connection to the attack.
