A Fayetteville lawyer covered for a friend and hid evidence in a shooting in downtown Charleston on New Year's Eve, according to police.Jamison T. Conrad, 37, was charged with accessory after the fact to malicious wounding, a felony, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court. Conrad was arrested Thursday afternoon.Surveillance video captured Conrad and two other people physically fighting with Charlie Scott outside the Ramada Inn Downtown and Recovery Sports Grill at about 2 a.m. Wednesday, police said.Conrad's friend, Michael Dale Underwood II, of Beckley, was later seen getting a .40 caliber handgun and shooting Scott, according to the complaint.Conrad allegedly removed Underwood's cell phone from the scene and told him to flee. Underwood ran to a nearby parking garage and drove away, according to the complaint. His cell phone was later found inside Conrad's hotel room at the Ramada Inn, police said.
Detectives interviewed Conrad early Wednesday. Conrad said the shooter is a "dear friend of his," but he would not identify him by name, according to the complaint. Conrad repeatedly refused to cooperate with police to identify Underwood. Several witnesses later identified Underwood to detectives, according to the complaint.One witnesses, Travis McClintic, told police he stayed with Conrad inside the hotel room after the shooting. When asked why the men did not call 911, he said "he was instructed by [Conrad] to not go to the police, to let the police come to them," according to the complaint.Scott had wounds to his left shoulder and left thigh. He was treated at CAMC General Hospital and has been released.Underwood, 30, turned himself into police on Wednesday. He was charged with malicious wounding and was being held Thursday in South Central Regional Jail in lieu of a $250,000 bail.Charleston Mayor Danny Jones said he would file an ethics complaint against Conrad with the state Lawyer Disciplinary Board.
