CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A 90-year-old man was found dead in his Kanawha City home Saturday, and Charleston police believe he was murdered.Lt. Steve Cooper identified the victim as George Molle Jr., 90. Molle lived at 4907 MacCorkle Ave."He was apparently murdered in his home," Cooper said. "We are trying to piece together evidence and other pieces of information to try and figure out exactly what happened."Cooper said investigators believe Molle was killed Friday.Cooper did not provide details about how Molle was killed or where Molle was located inside of the house. Cooper said doing so could compromise the investigation.Charleston police don't have any information as to the motive. Cooper called the incident "mysterious.""We don't have a lot of information yet," he said, "and that's what we are working on getting right now."Police were notified Saturday when a neighbor called, expressing concern because Molle hadn't been heard from, Cooper said.
Police arrived to investigate and then obtained a search warrant for Molle's house."It's a highly populated area," Cooper said. "It's very uncommon for there to be this type of crime there. It's typically a very safe neighborhood."He added that there is a lot of vehicular traffic, as well as foot traffic, in that area. A sidewalk separates Molle's house from MacCorkle Avenue.Police are awaiting an autopsy report, which Cooper said should be completed in the "next day or so."Cooper would not say if there was any sign of forced entry into the home or if there are any suspects in the case."We are asking anyone who may have seen anything out of the ordinary, we believe yesterday, to give us a call," Cooper said Saturday. "Any tip whatsoever is welcome at this point."Cooper said anyone with information should call 304-348-6480.
If Molle was slain, his killing would be the first in 2014. In 2013, there was one slaying in Charleston.Reach Caitlin Cook at email@example.com or 304-348-5113.
